It's bad enough having to watch your budget but having to watch your weight at the same time—unfair! So what can you do in this economic climate to get fit without breaking the bank? Actually, plenty.
The six Henderson library locations provide a diverse assortment of DVDs and books on fitness and healthy eating.
The libraries' DVD collection consists of many exercise favorites including Jane Fonda's new Prime Time Workout, mega fitness trainer Jillian Michaels' series, as well as specialty DVDs ranging from belly dancing to pilates. And, rotating through the different types DVDs can help keep motivation high.
The Henderson libraries also carry many best-seller fitness books, such as The Abs Diet by David Zenzinko and Fast Food Fix by Devin Alexander.
In its FreeWheelin program, the Humana Guidance Center located on North Green Parkway offers 18 "loaner" bicycles free of charge to encourage residents to exercise.
First-time, nonregistered Freewheelin participants must complete a one-time safety class consisting of a 30-minute bike safety video. The classes are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Mondays through Wednesdays and Fridays. A guided tour is arranged after class, if a participant doesn't want to ride solo.
Valid identification and a credit card are required by the center as collateral when checking out the bicycles.
Walking or running on local athletic tracks or park pathways helps burn the fat, too, and running up bleachers, intervals or jumping hurdles greatly increases the intensity of a workout.
The Adventures Fitness meet-up group combines adventure with fitness, and is a good way to beat the boredom of gym workouts and enjoy the outdoors and meet new people, too. Some of the unique activities the Adventures Fitness Group have to get members in shape are mud runs, scavenger hunts and skyrobics. The Adventures Fitness group's events are held infrequently, so this is the perfect supplement to change up your current exercise routine at a low price.
Henderson's seven recreation centers located around the city have an everyday cost of $15 per month for fitness center memberships, $25 for pool usage and $35 for both. But, if you don't want to join, a $3 drop-in fee gives residents access to the fitness centers, and a $1-$3 drop-in fee is charged for pool access.
Whatever form of exercise you choose, you can decrease stress, improve mental alertness, prevent illness, increase your energy level and boost your confidence. Just remember to be consistent: Consistency is key, and what you do consistently will determine your results.
