Former Henderson Councilwoman Kathleen Vermillion has been accused of misappropriating city and charity donor funds by Arash Ghafoori, interim executive director of Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, the charity Vermillion founded in 2000.
According to a local news source, Ghafoori filed a complaint with the Nevada attorney general's office on Wednesday, Jan. 11. The complaint alleges that Vermillion donated money from her city of Henderson discretionary fund to her charity, which she then took for personal benefit, and of improperly spending charity donations, including $28,000 dollars for five nights in the presidential suite at San Diego's Paradise Point Resort & Spa in November.
Vermillion, who resigned from the City Council three weeks ago, citing the need to focus on the charity and her children, fully denies the allegations.
"This stuff isn't true … none of it," Vermillion told The Henderson Press in response the complaint.
In mid-December, Vermillion, during an interview with The Henderson Press, alluded to tension within the board, specifically with Ghafoori.
"We have a lot of catch-up work to do, because I have not been at the helm (of the charity)," she said. "(And) because of the problems we've had with the executive director."
The attorney general's office, citing standard policy, declined to confirm an investigation is being conducted.
Seven board members have resigned from Vermillion's charity in the past month, several of whom also have expressed concerns regarding financial impropriety.
On Jan. 2,one day before her resignation from the Council , Vermillion said a "major shake-up" of board members was underway but expressed confidence that "everything will work out."
