Dear Editor: Each year 60,000 ...

Dear Editor:Each year 60,000 Americans are newly diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Roughly 1,000,000 Americans and their families are currently living with Parkinson's. That prevalence is expected to more than double by 2040.It is important that as many of us as possible, come forward to make our collective voices of support heard for biomedical research funding. We all deserve and need to be heard by our members of Congress, asking them to preserve and support sustained funding needs. I am part of a network of volunteers across America who advocate for awareness, education, and research. All of our voices together carry the power to help find better treatments for people who are living with Parkinson's, as well as to hasten the defeat of Parkinson's disease. More information can be found at www.parkinsonsaction.org .Very cordially,Carol MadarisLas VegasNV Asst. DirectorParkinson's Action Network ...more>>

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:May is a time of recognition for nurses across the country and right here in Nevada. For Everest College in Henderson, it was also a time of celebration as we congratulate the first graduating class from our associate degree nursing program.

The entire inaugural class passed the national NCLEX-RN licensing exam on the first try. This is the first class at any school in Nevada – non-profit or for-profit – to achieve 100 percent pass rate on the first attempt.

These well-prepared graduates are entering the nursing field as the aging baby boomer population and increasing need for health care resources have led to a nationwide shortage of qualified nurses.

The first nursing graduates of Everest College – Henderson have overcome a variety of obstacles to achieve their goal. They now join the ranks of highly skilled professionals able to care for the citizens of Nevada. I would also like to thank the outstanding faculty who helped them, as well as our clinical partners that provide real-life patient-care experiences for our students. Our students also work with interactive manikins and a computer-controlled, SimMan simulator that reacts to medications and simulates birth. These simulation tools help to develop critical thinking skills.

In this economy, no job is secure, but it’s safe to say the field of nursing will play a critical role in our health care system for the indefinite future.

We wish each of our graduates the best of luck and continued success in their new careers.
